Warlock Tiles Review

I hadn’t planned on buying these when I dropped into Gameology that day, but they were having an EOFY sale and the dungeon set caught my eye. So I bought it and continued my trip home.

Opening the box, I was impressed with what I saw. Nice detail, a good number of parts and what looked like a simple enough system to lock them together. So much so, I jumped back on their website and put another order together for additional sets which I picked up the next afternoon and had a bit of a play.

The pieces clip together fairly easily enough and are firm enough that you can pick up. With the dungeon tiles sets, the floor pieces come two sided with stone on one side and timber floors on the other. There are 10mm thick walls and doors for outside walls and thinner wall and door sections for internal walls. They could do with more internal door pieces but ah well.

While you could slap together set pieces while in play, I think these are best to be assembled before hand and revealed as required, as construction can be time consuming and you’d better have a good idea on how you want the dungeon to go together before hand, ie with a map. If you use an external wall on a wall that later turns out to be internal, you’re going to throw out the placement of your floors. The clips seem pretty durable. At first they take a lot of pressure to get in place, but can be removed a lot easier with practice.

My thoughts are these are best used for big set piece encounters and not general dungeon crawls, though if a lot of your room sizes are generally the same you could easily swap out pre-built rooms as required. With practice these can be very handy, but don’t think that you could buy a box and put together a cohesive usable set piece that same day. Learning where best to use the different corner pieces and walls comes with practice.

One last thing, though I got two of the dungeon set 1 sets, with only one you can still easily build a four or five room dungeon or building.

If you’re looking to add a little more visual eye candy to your gaming table these are great, but they won’t be replacing my VTT anytime soon for most encounters and crawls.
