Easy and quick collection

Bought Small World as a birthday gift online and collected from the store on the weekend when I was free, in and out of the store in 2 minutes. No issues. The birthday boy was very happy, as it's an enjoyable strategy game.
Unfortunately a man was abusing staff about wearing masks in the store - but they were handling it as best as they could.

Small World

Based on the decade-older game Vinci, Small World is a fantasy-themed territory-acquisition game where you need to balance attacking and defending, in order to earn coins to win. Small World has similarities to Risk but is less chance-driven, as it allows for more strategy and less dependence on the whims of the die. Small World still manages to be both lighthearted fun (as you play orcs, ghouls, dwarves, elves, and more) and strategically rich.

Small World comes with a lot of bits – 14 races, 20 special powers, and the rest. The board is a map divided up into various regions—mountains, farmland, swamps, meadows, and so on.

The game instruction are a bit of an overload and do need time to get your head around. So much so that cheat-sheets have been supplied. Due to the 14 races and 20 special powers, reading up on each ability can slow the game down. But there is an abundance of game replay due to the numerous random combinations of race and special powers.

The artwork is pretty cool and well designed, except for the board. Play pieces and the board design clash badly – the board makes it difficult to see play pieces with its over-coloured choppy erratic design. This also has brought question to which territories are actually farmland, swamps, meadows, and so on.

All said, I’m getting a few mixed reactions from the family.

Small World Original Base Game Board Game

We were so excited about this game. However, when unpacking it we found that the pop-out pieces (Pieces precut into a whole piece of cardboard) were not cut properly causing some to be damaged in the process. We also found that the game is quite difficult for our family as most of us are colourblind. This can make distinguishing between the characters quite difficult.
Perhaps one of the most distressing factors was the character representation. The only female character is a thin waisted, buxom, scantily clad Amazon woman. This is supposed to be a family game, is it not? Sexualising the only female character detracts from this.
On initial viewing, I thought the game might be too difficult for my girls (aged 9 and 12), however it is essentially a simple game where strategy can be used as one becomes more familiar with the characters and powers.
