Destinies is a competitive, story-driven, game of adventure and exploration, mixing an app and a board game. Each of the 5 unique scenarios depicts part of a vivid world, full of dark stories, epic characters, and mysteries to solve.

Each player takes the role of a hero on a quest to fulfill their destiny. During the game, players will discover new parts of the world presented on tiles, explore them, and visit points of interest.

There they’ll learn more about the story and make choices about how they want to interact with people, creatures or situations faced. The consequences of each choice are meaningful and often change the state of the world forever.

Destinies comes with 30 miniatures representing the people, beasts, and divine beings players will encounter. It also features a huge 90mm tall Abbadon boss miniaure. Players can also enjoy Destinies solo either in the relaxed “Explorer mode” taking time to enjoy the world or in the “Challenger-mode” which presents special events and time pressure!

Destinies is a perfect game for players looking for adventure and seeking a narrative and engaging tabletop experience.

Not recommended for solo only

I bought this game mostly for solo play, but I'll keep the start of my review general and talk about the specific issues I had with the solo at the end.

Pros:
- Production value and art is very nice.
- Story's are interesting and unique.
- Characters each have a different story arc that can reveal twists you weren't
aware of on a second or third playthrough.
- Community editor looks cool, but no public content has been published at the
time of this review. You can make your own though.
- App sound effects and intro narration really set the scene.
- Dice rolling and mitigation is very strategic and does limit, but not remove, the luck factor to the game.
- The five base scenarios, and three characters per scenario, do offer a decent amount of re-playability for the price.
- Reading the clues correctly and QR scanning the correct item at the right time is really satisfying. Very old-school adventure game vibes from this mechanic.
- Very simple rules means you can be playing in minutes

Cons:
- The miniatures are nice but not necessary. They only serve as markers for locations. They are also much smaller than a standard 28mm, making it hard to mix with other miniatures for wargames or D&D.
- The app handles so much of the game that you barely need to look at the board at all. In fact without the QR code scanning of cards you wouldn't even need to set up physically to play.

Solo play issues:
I suspect the designers merely adapted solo play after the competitive game mode because it seemed like it would work, but did not playtest it enough.
The main issue I had was that in any game mode there is an unknown amount of turns it will take to complete your characters endgame story, a period of the game where a choose your own adventure series plays out with no ability to do normal move/interact actions. However, because the amount of turns needed for the endgame varies for each character and story combo. The added solo time limit creates some strange and unsatisfying situations where the story has almost resolved and you have succeeded at every step, but then it abruptly ends. This might make no narrative sense. For example you have killed the boss and are returning to town, but then the fail-state plays and the boss has killed you because you ran out of time.
This might not be as much of an issue if it wasn't app-driven, since there is no way to "hack" these unsatisfying losses. You have to replay the whole scenario from scratch if you want to see the ending, even if you had otherwise seen almost everything it had to offer.
The alternative solo mode without a time limit is nice, but it is difficult to lose with unlimited time.
Additionally if you do want to play this with friends later, unless you are picking a new mission, you will be at a significant competitive advantage.
All this being said, it can still be a good solo experience, all the stuff in the Pro's section is still true.
Ultimately I hope community content or expansions may create more solo friendly scenarios in future.

A great game for a Beginner audience

This was a fun game, that easily brings fantasy elements to a board game with solid mechanics. I loved the quests varying by character and the different ways to win. The app, as well, made it SO easy to just set up and play. It was a breeze to keep track of everything we needed to and I loved the stat system.

My only two gripes were with the length of each arc (we knocked all of the stories that came with the game over in less than 8 hours) and the re-playability. Because of the nature of the game, all of the characters, the items you require and the maps stay relatively the same. We could probably play again with different characters and different goals, but I’d say not much after that - and knowing where to go and who to talk to would probably lower play time again.

The skill level was also relatively low, given you could succeed at most things with lucky rolls over actually needing to figure out how to bump stats. However, we play a lot of games and focus a lot on mechanics so it’s probably good for more of an entry level player!

That being said, if that’s what you’re looking for, this game is 100% worth it. It’s a great price point for 8 - 16 hours of entertainment and especially if you don’t play a lot of serious board games, this is perfect to dip your toes.
